During WWII as the U.S. 5th Army advanced towards northern Italy, The United States Army Air Force (U.S.A.A.F.) and the other Allies used already existing airfields in the liberated territories, in which they positioned their aircrafts, except in Metato Airfield. No news if they used or not the Lucca – Tassignano, Torre del Lago, Pistoia, Massa – Cinquale Airfields, probably not. In northern Tuscany the Airfields were : (in order from south to north) 01:56 Pontedera – (November 1944 – August 1945) 06:58 Pisa – San Giusto - (September 1944 – September 1945) 14:31 Metato (Pisa) - September 1944 – September 1945) 17:21 Firenze – (October 1944 – 23 August 1945) 22:02 Lucca - Tassignano –Taken Sept. 1944 - No news if used or not 24:37 Torre del Lago – Taken Sept. 1944 - No news if used or not 28:35 Pistoia - Taken Sept. 1944 - No news if used or not 31:24 Massa – Cinquale – Taken April 1945* - No news if used or not. *This date close to the surrender of the Germans in Italy (May 2, 1945) because the Allies, liberated Pietrasanta (located in the territory of Versilia , SE of Cinquale) on Sept. 19, 1944, employed c. 7 months (April 1945) to break through the western part of the Gothic Line (northern Versilia, Massa area and the Apuan Alps), then continuing along the coast towards northern Italy (La Spezia, Genova). It must be said that the Metato Airfield was used by the Americans as a prison camp (U.S. Army DisciplinaryTraining Center) for U.S. military personnel who had committed serious criminal offenses and were awaiting either court martial or transfer to a penal institution in the United States or execution. The music is: ''Rickety Stairs'' (Moriarty-Straight-Bargy) – Roy Bargy piano roll (1921) - Imperial-91250. For the USAAF Airfields in southern Tuscany see: • U.S.A.A.F. Airfields In Southern Tus...
