Is your design team overwhelmed? In this session, Adam Morgan, Executive Creative Director at Adobe walks through how he uses the Whelm scale to help balance his team's workload, protect employees from burnout, and stay engaged to produce their best work. 00:00 — Introducing Adam Morgan 01:07 — The 3 different types of employees on creative teams 03:45 — How do you balance the workload across the team? 07:00 — What is the Whelm Scale 12:34 — The benefits of using the Whelm Scale 14:00 — How can you foster an open culture with your team? 16:30 — How do you account for burnout factors outside of work? 17:48 — Is it good for your team to get overwhelmed occasionally? 20:38 — How do you manage people who are always under/over whelmed? 26:17 — Should creatives take it upon themselves to find creative inspiration? Here's how the scale works: 1 is “Underwhelmed” with work 5 is “Whelmed” or relatively content with the workload 10 is “Overwhelmed” and ready to burn out. Then, below the scale is each category of work relevant to your team. It may be deadlines, number of meetings, reports to create, overtime, presentations, etc. Then, you determine (through team feedback and observation) a reasonable workload. Morgan stresses that the point here isn’t to level out all the numbers: instead, the team member or manager uses the scale to figure out balance. If a team member is at a 9 on projects but a 2 on meetings, that’s probably okay, at least in the short term.
