Young Park shooting trial continues after jury selection, with more witnesses to testify

The trial of Tomas Rivas, one of four suspects in the Young Park mass shooting in Las Cruces, commenced with jury selection and opening statements on Monday. The shooting, which occurred on March 21 of last year at an unsanctioned car meet, resulted in the deaths of Dominick Estrada, Andrew Madrid, and Jason, and injured more than a dozen others. Doña Ana County District Attorney Fernando Macias accused Rivas and his brother of attempting to dispose of evidence by discarding a red jacket. Macias stated, "These yellow markers is where the shell casings are found... There are 60 bullets that were shot by 4 individuals... The four shot 60 shots... the other individual shot 7, hit no one." In defense, attorney Samuel Paul Ruyle argued that law enforcement hastily blamed Rivas. "You all saw the videos it was chaos... people died. People were murdered- it was horrible. My client Tomas Rivas did not murder anyone, and there is a wealth of scientific evidence that supports that," Ruyle said, asserting that the truth would lead to Rivas's acquittal. The trial featured witness testimony, including from a Las Cruces police officer and a lieutenant responsible for securing the scene. Jurors were shown crime scene photos and videos depicting the events leading up to the shooting. The trial is set to continue with further witness testimonies.
