"How to start raising chickens for eggs" Guidelines for Beak Trimming to Prevent Pecking and Cannibalism in Poultry In this video, we will explore the beak trimming technique for chickens, which is aimed at preventing pecking, feather eating, and cannibalism, especially in breeding flocks and commercial laying hens, particularly in cage systems. Causes of Pecking: High temperatures in the poultry house and intense lighting can disrupt the chickens' physiology, leading to excessive pecking to the point where intestines are pulled out and eaten. Sometimes, just one hot afternoon can result in severe pecking damage, similar to an outbreak. Overcrowding in the chicken coop. During the pullet phase, when feed intake is restricted or when using a method of feeding every two days, chickens tend to peck at each other more on the fasting days. Beak Trimming Technique: 1.Timing for Beak Trimming: Trim the beak of chicks at 7-10 days of age. Trim the beak of pullets at 7-8 weeks old or 12-16 weeks old. 2.How to Trim the Beak: Trim both the upper and lower beaks. The upper beak should be trimmed at least 2mm away from the nostrils for chicks, and 6mm for pullets. The lower beak should be longer than the upper beak by 3mm. 3.Preparation Before Trimming the Beak: Fasting the chickens for 4 hours before the trimming procedure. Provide water mixed with Vitamin K to help prevent health issues related to bleeding. 4.Post-Trimming Care: Continue to give chickens water mixed with Vitamin K for 4-6 days, along with 1g of tetracycline per liter of water to prevent infection. Allow chickens to eat freely with feed placed thickly so that the beak does not touch the bottom or sides of the feeder. This ensures food remains on the beak to prevent further bleeding. 5.Beak Trimming Tools: Use an electric beak-trimming machine that trims and heats the beak simultaneously, making it quicker and less painful for the chickens. If using a knife, place the chicken’s beak on the edge of a wooden board to facilitate the trimming process. Important Notes: Monitor the chickens after beak trimming to address any abnormal health issues promptly. Avoid crowding or stressing the chickens after the procedure to prevent disturbing the flock. We hope this video helps you master the beak trimming technique for chickens, reducing pecking behavior and ensuring your flock grows healthy.
