Are you overthinking happiness? The Trouble with Happiness: 1. You think you need a reason to be happy… So when I asked you, “Are you happy?” typically, your mind would question how well you think your life is going at the moment and also consider your current mood. So you attach conditions to your happiness. 2. You think it’s an emotion – feeling elated most of the time Instead, realize it’s a choice; an attitude; 3. You think it’s “out there” It’s only truly in the present moment – here and now. And it’s an internal state (within you) So if it’s in the present moment, then attaching conditions to it will never work! Because those conditions are about things that are outside of you, and not here and now. You don’t need a reason to be happy (and in fact its only possible when you don’t have one, otherwise it can never last long). Human nature means you ‘ll very quickly be striving for the next thing – the next condition you attach to your happiness. The answer? Choose to Be happy for no reason. Choose Unconditional Happiness So even when the proverbial hits the fan, life happens and sometimes gets you down, you’ll bounce back so much more easily because you’re not looking for everything to be going how you want, to be happy. And the awesome thing that happens then, is that you suddenly see so many things in your life to be thankful for…and you know that gratitude is SO good for you! (Science tells us so!) You stop fault-finding and you’ll find it SO much easier to just live in the moment. So the challenge for you now is to see if you can practise Unconditional Happiness – being happy for no reason! This takes practise, so be kind to yourself, and simply set an intention to start noticing where you attach conditions, and letting them go. Challenge yourself to practise being happy for no reason.
