This is how a large hill appeared on which the first houses of Riza were built. The giant is the symbol of the city and adorns the city's coat of arms. However, in reality the name “Rize” comes from the Slavic “Riezowe” - “cut (of the earth)”. The Latinized name "Rezoa" is found for the first time in a charter of Pope Calixtus II, dated October 1119, when Bishop Dietrich I of Naumburg consecrated the most ancient monastery of the Meissen mark.
