Visiting Hailuoto, July 2021, Finland. Walking takes place around the most western village of Marjaniemi known for its sand beaches, old fishing village and Marjaniemi Lighthouse. Hailuoto is an island and a municipality in Northern Ostrobothnia region. The population of Hailuoto is 953 (March 31, 2021), which make it the smallest municipality in Northern Ostrobothnia and the former Oulu Province in terms of population. The municipality covers an area of 200.53 km2 (77.43 sq mi). Of all the Finnish islands in Finland's sea areas, Hailuoto is the third largest after Ahvenanmaa/Åland and Kemiönsaari/Kimitoön. Land in the region is constantly rising due to post-glacial rebound. The permanent settlement of Hailuoto apparently began in the 12th century. Residents came from many directions, especially from Karelia. The island has a rough history: During the Great Famine of 1695–1697, 88 inhabitants of Hailuoto died. During the Great Northern War (1713–1721), 200 Cossacks of the Tsardom of Russia killed about 800 people in Hailuoto with an ax on September 29, 1714. Many of the victims had sought protection on the island, as Hailuoto had a population of less than 300 at that time. The bloodshed done overnight was the greatest of the Great Northern War. 00:00 Intro 0:24 Taking a ferry "Merisilta" which operates regularly between Hailuoto and Oulunsalo 2:28 Begin of the walk around Marjaniemi shore village 5:10 Over the dune to watch the sea 7:33 View to Marjaniemen majakka - Marjaniemi Lighthouse 8:51 Continuing the walk on the path 15:00 Closer to the sea over the dunes 18:45 Walking the shore 28:05 Moments with the swan 30:40 Harbour 32:21 Old fishing village buildings 33:37 Active seafaring and fishing since the 18th century in the village 34:50 Closer to Marjaniemi Lighthouse, completed in 1871 27:08 Next to the lighthouse 37:58 Restaurants and cafes in the village Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Mar...
