Karzai and Singh walking out STORYLINE Afghan President Hamid Karzai met Monday with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss regional security and cooperation between the two nations. Karzai, accompanied by ten ministers and top advisers, as well as lawmakers and a high-level business delegation, is in India for a four-day visit. Security forces in India and Afghanistan are battling Islamic militants that they say operate out of Pakistan, which lies between the two countries. Indian officials accuse Pakistan of funding and supporting Islamic militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, while Afghan officials allege Pakistan is not doing enough to stop the infiltration of militants into Afghan territory to launch attacks. Pakistan''s government denies both claims. Karzai said, "We have been affected by terrorism in a massive way for so many many years... Afghanistan has every reason to work with India and the rest of the international community and our neighbours to get rid of this menace." "There is need for pooling our knowledge, our experience, our intelligence-gathering activities in this region to deal effectively with this menace," said Singh. India also pledged a further 50 (m)million US-dollars to Afghanistan. Since Karzai''s government took over in Afghanistan at the end of 2001, India has given around 650 (m) million US-dollars in aid to help rebuild the country following decades of war. During a visit to Kabul in August last year, Singh and Karzai laid the foundation for a new parliament complex that India is building.
