Close up of police holding a man to the ground 3. SOUNDBITE (German) Stefan Keilbach, Press spokesman, Stuttgart police: "English and German fans ran into each other here after the match, the English, like yesterday, were already pretty drunk, possibly there was provocation from both sides. German fans for example, were singing, 'we're going to Berlin, English stay at home'. That could have been a trigger, then the bottles and chairs and tables started flying and the situation escalated out of control." 4. Police in riot gear leading a man away 5. SOUNDBITE (German) Stefan Keilbach, Press spokesman, Stuttgart police: "You have to keep in mind that our English colleagues issued a number of banning orders, so the real English hooligans stayed at home. That means we are now dealing mostly with drunken English football fans. Although, I have to say, when someone gets that drunk, you can't really call them football fans anymore." 6. Man in England football shirt being held against the side of a police van by police in riot gear STORYLINE: More than 300 people were arrested after two brief but violent disturbances involving English football fans on Saturday in Stuttgart, southern Germany. English and German fans clashed in a plaza near outdoor viewing screens. England fans were in Stuttgart ahead of their team's second round World Cup match against Ecuador on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, Germany beat Sweden two-nil in Stuttgart. German fans were singing when England fans began throwing plastic chairs and bottles at them, Stuttgart police said. "German fans for example, were singing, 'we're going to Berlin, English stay at home'. That could have been a trigger, then the bottles and chairs and tables started flying and the situation escalated out of control," described Stuttgart Police spokesman Stefan Keilbach. Five Germans were injured before police officers in riot gear separated the two sides. Police lines two or three deep corralled the English fans and waded into the crowd, arresting them one by one. Police said it wasn't clear how long those detained would be held, but added it was likely they would not be watching Sunday's game. Earlier on Saturday in the same area of central Stuttgart, police arrested 122 English fans who had been throwing bottles and glasses at passers-by from a pub terrace. In that incident arriving officers also became targets of what police described as drunken fans.
