Toyota has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward a zero-carbon future with the hydrogen fuel cell Hilux pick-up project entering its final phase. Since unveiling the first prototype in September 2023, Toyota and its consortium partners, supported by United Kingdom Government funding, have moved into an intensive evaluation and demonstration stage. This project highlights Toyota’s multi-path strategy towards carbon neutrality, utilizing various powertrain solutions – hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric, fuel cell electric, and e-fuels – to meet different user needs and local infrastructure requirements. Ten fuel cell Hilux prototypes have been constructed at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing United Kingdom (TMUK) facility in Derby, England. Five of these vehicles are undergoing rigorous field testing to assess safety, performance, functionality, and durability, generating real-world test drive data. The remaining five units are engaged in customer and media demonstrations, including at the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. By showcasing hydrogen fuel cell technology, Toyota aims to pave the way for a successful hydrogen transport sector in the future. Leveraging 30 years of hydrogen fuel cell research and development, the Hilux project will contribute to the next generation of fuel cell technology, promising longer lifecycles, increased driving range, and significantly reduced costs. Toyota anticipates Europe will become one of the largest hydrogen fuel cell markets by 2030, with steady growth in mobility and power generation applications. In December 2023, Toyota Motor Europe announced the Hydrogen Factory Europe, demonstrating Toyota’s coordinated approach to the commercialization of this technology, encompassing development, production, sales, and aftersales. The fuel cell Hilux prototype is a crucial step in developing hydrogen technology and promoting the widespread adoption of hydrogen ecosystems and infrastructure across Europe. The project started with a feasibility study in early 2022 and has advanced rapidly, with prototype construction completed by July 2023.
