After having moved the entire register file onto a backplane, it is now time to start doing the same thing for the instruction pipeline. In this video we design, layout, and assemble a PCB for the program memory. An additional latch chip allows us to hide the bogus data produced by the double-pumping mechanism during the first half of the clock cycle. Once assembled we integrate the PCB into the CPU build and get rid of the program ROM breadboard. This video series explores the concepts and techniques that make modern computer processors so incredibly fast and powerful. I build my very own 8-bit processor from individual logic gates and gradually evolve it to become a superscalar out-of-order machine. Along the way, we take a deep dive into contemporary computer architecture in a hands-on fashion and rediscover some of the foundations of modern computing.
