Dr. Howard Cotler discusses scarring after cervical spine surgery. For more information or to schedule a consultation call 713-523-8884 or visit http://www.gulfcoastspinecare.com. After cervical spine surgery, most of the incisions are transverse and they're put in skin creases. So, you know, initially a scar is red. After surgery, they're all like that. But with time, anywhere from three to six months to a year, the scar gradually starts to pale out. And you don't even notice it, because it's hidden or buried inside the crease. Even patients that we have to do an incision along the sternocleidomastoid muscle or along the muscle that's in front of the neck, that's where my plastic surgery techniques come into play. We now have new suture materials that give very excellent closures. People barely notice the scars, unless you're a keloid former. If you're a keloid former, then all bets are off. You're a keloid former. With these plastic dressings, the covering of the dressing is silver-impregnated. So, it decreases the potential for an infection. Also, the plastic covering allows the patients so they can shower immediately after surgery. And they never have to have their family member change a dressing in the home. If it starts to peel up, we give them a little repair kit. Any family member can do that, but usually they last for seven to 10 days. Patient comes in, we take off the dressing. They're done.
