In the days since the shooting, the terminal has been thick with police armed with clubs and guns. Yet metal detectors outside several entrances stand unmanned and unused. Police Constable Ajit Kumar Dattatray Nalwade was at the station when the gunmen opened fire on the concourse. He explained how the police battled with the gunmen as they sprayed the station with gunfire. Nalwade pointed at different locations inside the terminal and said the two gunmen moved in different directions while firing and throwing grenades. The gunmen attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus at 2147 local time (0417 GMT). The shooting left 53 people dead - most of them in a waiting room for out-of-town trains. Eventually, the gunmen stole a truck and drove away. A little later, one was killed by police and another, the only gunmen taken alive, was captured. Ajmal Qasab is being interrogated by Indian authorities who said he confessed to being trained by the banned Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Lashkar was outlawed in Pakistan under pressure from the US in 2002, a year after Washington and Britain listed it as a "terrorist" group. India has already demanded Pakistan take "strong action" against those responsible for the attacks, and the US has pressured Islamabad to cooperate in the investigation.
