This set is from The Hubcap Comedy Festival in Moncton, New Brunswick, arguably the best festival in the country. Now I've performed on a handful of "big shows" in my life: Opening for Chris D'Elia in front of 2500 people, a TV taping and a Just For Laughs Gala. In all three scenarios, I had to go on stage first ("bullet", it's called). You have to start the show from 0 and you're certainly not in the best spot to "shine". I've been told before that bullet is a compliment, that "you're the best comedian for the job". That's flattering, but basically I'm the canary that's sent into the mine to die. Well this time, the canary went into the cave and came out a fucking eagle. For the first time, I was loose enough to deviate from the setlist, address the crowd and address the city. The first 2-3 minutes is all un tested material; thoughts I gathered while walking through the city earlier that day. If you're not from Moncton, you might not connect with the first couple minutes but pay attention to how the crowd did. This is a breakthrough set for me in that I finally found a recipe to shine at the beginning of a lineup, in a high stakes environment. You're told to "polish" your material and stay within the lines on shows like this but if you've been following me at all, you know I'm not a fan of staying within the lines. This set is proof that I don't have to, and probably never will. I can't wait for my next high pressure situation and in the words of Tony Montana, I'll take your fuckin' bullet.
