The incident resulted in the death of 45-year-old Derrick J. Kittling of Alexandria. The preliminary investigation revealed that a RPSO deputy stopped Kittling’s vehicle around 1:30 p.m. on 7th Street near Broadway Avenue. A physical confrontation occurred during which Kittling gained control of the deputy’s Taser. The deputy then discharged his firearm, striking Kittling, who later died at the hospital. Kittling's brother, Lt. Colonel Kenny VanBuren, is a high-ranking Louisiana State Police official.
