Hunt on for Bain defence witness A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Dunedin man due to give evidence in the Bain murder trial. David Bain is accused of the murders of five family members at their Dunedin home in June 1994. The defence had been hoping to call Dean Cottle but the prospective witness has disappeared. The defence team want him to testify at Bain's re-trial but the prospective witness has disappeared. The defence has basically finished its case, Cottle their last witness. If he can't be found by police, defence counsel want parts of his affidavit read in court. Cottle was expected to give evidence about his contact and conversations with the accused's sister, Laniet Bain. His name is already familiar to the jury. Ten days ago a woman told the court that when Laniet was working as a prostitute, he gave her a cellphone. Defence counsel Michael Reed QC asked the woman what was the relationship between Laniet and Cottle. "She never really specified that. But that there was things that she had to do because she had that cellphone," the woman replied. "She had to have sex with Dean Cottle." The witness said Laniet was unhappy about what was going on. Reed asked the witness did Laniet ever talk about Dean Cottle in relationship to her family and whether the family knew about him. "She told me that he was blackmailing her with the knowledge of her being a sex worker," the witness replied. With an arrest warrant out, they still want him in the witness box. But with the evidence due to wrap up on Wednesday, time is running out.
