I needed to do an oil change today. I had a set of upgraded clutch springs sitting around, and this seemed a good time to install them while I had the crank case drained of oil. The new clutch springs are in and seemed to function just fine. The install was extremely simple. These specific springs are claimed to be 30% stiffer than the OEM springs. SMR also makes a six disc clutch pack for this bike. I’m still using the five disc stock clutch pack at this point. I don’t have the need to spend extra money for the additional set. However, I may do so in the future when my clutch eventually wears out. I suspect that may be many years away. Or unless I find a way to double my horsepower. But since I don’t do performance modifications to my engines, that’s unlikely to be something I pursue. I’ve not done anything to add more power to my bike so the springs are kind of super superfluous at this point. But they’re in there now and I can defer sweating any future power enhancements. I also looked at the current clutch plates and noticed no significant wear. Which isn’t too surprising for a motorcycle with only about 1200 miles on it. Of course, all of those miles are at a go kart track and not under any real street type use. Notes to myself from todays work: 1. The the highflowfiltro part number HF118 is not the correct oil filter for this bike. 2. the oil filter screen on the oil drain plug has a fair amount of trapped junk inside. I could not get it out. It would be wise to replace it at the next oil change. 3. It is not necessary to drain the oil before removing the oil filter. The cartridge does not remain full and is above the oil sump level.
