“Home! Sweet Home!” was composed by Englishman Henry Bishop, with lyrics by American John Howard Payne. Bishop first published the melody as “A Sicilian Air.” The song, adapted from Payne’s 1823 opera “Clari, or the Maid of Milan,” was sung by “Mrs. Williams” at its 1823 American premiere in Philadelphia. In 1852, Bishop reprised the song as a parlour ballad. In the US, the song became very popular during the American Civil War, although it was banned from Union Army camps for possible desertions to return “home.” “Home! Sweet Home!” remained popular following the Civil War. It has been used nationally and internationally in orchestral, instrumental, vocal and operatic works, as well as in film and musical scores. The song’s most well-known film appearance is in MGM’s “The Wizard Oz.” Other film appearances include “First Love,” “Anna and the King of Siam,” as well as the musical “The King and I,” and the Disney film “Lady and the Tramp.” Popular recordings of the song were made beginning in 1891 by John Yorke AtLee with later recordings by Vera Lynn, Bing Crosby, Joan Sutherland, and more recently Katherine Jenkins, in 2014. “There’s no place like home” for pianist Charles Manning as he improvises the beloved “Home! Sweet Home!”
