Let’s talk about how you can practice playing mahjong on your own. 1-Player mahjong, also called mahjong solitaire or solo Mahj, is the best way to improve your mahjong ability at home! This is how you can get better at choosing your hand in mahjong and get confident about choosing which tiles to pass and keep during the Charleston. Here’s the step by step for practicing mahjong with yourself. To do this, you will need your NMJL Card and your bag of mahjong tiles. 1. Draw 13 tiles from your tile bag. 2. Get organized. Sort tiles by suit/type, and then in number order within each suit. This helps you to identify patterns in the tiles you’ve been dealt. 3. Choose a SECTION of the card, not a line! Pick a section that goes with the tiles you’ve been dealt—throughout the Charleston, you will collect tiles that fit that section and pass tiles that don’t fit the section. 4. Do a Mock Charleston. For each Charleston pass, you will pass three tiles that do not work for your chosen section of the card and draw three new tiles from your tile bag. 5. As you pass tiles, start to look within your chosen section for 1-2 hands that fit best with the tiles you’ve collected. 6. Throw the tiles back in your bag, shake it and try again!
