But there is one rule I follow and learned the hard way. Buy The Gear That You Will Use For Years. I used to just buy the gear that I could afford at the time. The 501 is slightly cheaper at 899, compared to the 502 which comes in at $1199. I can't say it enough, save your money and buy the equipment that will last you years. I have had my first SmallHD monitor for years now and still use it on a daily bases. For you DSLR guys the 501 has got your name on it. And for the guys that want something that can take both HDMI and SDI the 502 is your best bet.
