SS Thistlegorm is a world-famous wreck in the Strait of Gubal. It feels like an underwater World War II museum: inside the holds and around the deck you can still see cargo such as army trucks, Universal Carrier vehicles, Norton and BSA motorbikes, weapons and ammunition, radio equipment, aircraft parts, and even two steam locomotives. The ship was built in 1940 in Sunderland (UK). On 6 October 1941, while anchored and waiting to pass the Suez Canal, it was bombed by German Heinkel He 111 aircraft. The bombs hit the ammunition area, the explosion was huge, and the ship broke apart and sank in less than a minute. Diving notes from the article: currents can be strong, so divers use a descent/ascent line, and there can be a short 40–60 minute slack-water window. Depth is about 30–32 m at the bottom, with parts of the wreck starting around 15–17 m. An Advanced level (or similar experience) is recommended for a full tour. Marine life is also a big part of the dive: you can often see schools of tuna and barracuda, plus batfish and Napoleon wrasse, with moray eels and lionfish hiding in the wreck.
