About this contemplation The Eighth Contemplation of the Contemplation Sutra (觀無量壽佛經) introduces the Three Holy Ones of the West — Amitābha Buddha, Avalokiteśvara, and Mahāsthāmaprāpta. Here, the Buddha teaches Vaidehī a profound truth: “When you contemplate the Buddha, this mind becomes the Buddha. This mind is Buddha.” The practice begins by visualizing a golden Amitābha seated on a lotus. When this is clear, two great lotus seats appear beside him — Avalokiteśvara on the left, Mahāsthāmaprāpta on the right. Their light illuminates the Pure Land, and every jeweled tree reveals three lotus blossoms bearing their transformed images. The practitioner then hears the sounds of water, birds, and jeweled trees teaching Dharma. If these teachings align with the sūtras, this is called “the coarse vision of the Pure Land.” If they do not, the Buddha warns, one has fallen into delusion. This contemplation stabilizes the mind for the deeper Buddha-visualizations that follow, and eliminates immeasurable karmic obstacles. “This is the Eighth Contemplation — right contemplation, not wrong contemplation.” Support the Living Dharma Project Help us bring all 2,457 texts of the Taishō Tripiṭaka to life through videos, podcasts, and AI-guided learning tools.
