Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Opeth. Opeth was originally a Swedish death metal group that formed in 1989 and their musical style and overall direction shifted toward progressive metal over the years and around the release of their album 'Heritage' in 2011, the band shifted toward a progressive rock style overall with a clean vocal-based direction. At the center of everything is vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt, who has been the driving creative force behind the band since the very beginning. As their sound and style have changed, so have the musicians and members of the band. Peter Lindgren was the original second guitarist until he left around 2007 and was replaced by six-string maniac Fredrik Åkesson, who in many ways has become Opeth's "stunt guitarist" for solos and many of the busier leads in concert. This lesson takes a look at a number of interesting and unusual chord-based moments hiding in Opeth's music, and the selections in this lesson run the gambit from early songs and musical ideas, all the way up to their most recent release - 'In Cauda Venenum' - which was released in September of last year. There are plenty of cool ideas and some slick ideas hiding in this lesson, so if you're a fan of this group you already know what's in store for you in this one, while those that are not familiar with Opeth and their music will surely be impressed with the plethora of cool chord-based ideas and riffs found in this episode.
