I know I’m not the only one who finds themselves using YouTube less and less. For quite a while now, it’s as if by some invisible force of magnetism, I have been pulled away from the platform. But not consciously. Rather, without even realising it. This naturally got me thinking: what’s the deal? I used to love using this website, both as a viewer and a creator. To go from using it religiously to now dreading to take a peek can’t be an accident. After much deliberation, I came to an odd sociological conclusion: YouTubers have the same incentives as drug dealers. In this lecture I shall explain exactly what I mean by this, demonstrating how the incentive structure for certain bad actor creators unleashed a slow metamorphosis of the demographics of the algorithm, making it harder and harder to find vistas actually worth watching, while barraging us with absolute rubbish. Perhaps most important of all, I shall also try to provide some potential solutions to prevent the continuing downfall of this once amazing place.
