Why is the number 13 considered unlucky? For a lot of people, the number 13 is considered unlucky, because it is said to bring misfortune. This is known as Triskaidekaphobia and has been the reason for the fear of Friday the 13th or paraskevidekatriaphobia. This has led to the avoidance of the 13th floor in some buildings, the omission of flat number 13 in apartment complexes, as well removing other elements associated with this number. Why is this so? A myth surrounding the origin of this fear involves one of the world’s oldest legal documents, the Code of Hammurabi, which reportedly omitted the 13th law from its list of legal laws. In reality it was just a simple clerical error made by one of the document’s early translators. Mathematicians and scientists consider the prominence of the number 12, which has been considered a perfect number in the ancient world. The ancient Sumerians developed a numeral system based on the number 12. A single day consists of two 12-hour half days. Directly following the so-called perfect number 12 was the numerical value, 13, which was considered lacking and unusual. This fear of the odd or unknown would play into other popular theories from the ancient world. It also seems as if unexplained fears surrounding the number 13 are a primarily Western concept. Some cultures, including the Ancient Egyptians, actually considered the number lucky.
