Bishnupriya Gupta - An economic history of India

Instituto Figuerola de Historia y Ciencias Sociales de la UC3M and the Fundación Ramón Areces are organising the 24th Figuerola Conference on 5 November 2025. This conference presents a new economic history of India, from the 16th century to its integration into the global economy after independence. Based on new data, concepts and theories of economics and economic history, a framework is constructed to understand the economic impact and legacy of British rule, the Great Divergence between Europe and Asia, and the evolution of inequalities into the 21st century. Bishnupriya Gupta is professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. Her research focuses primarily on economic history and development economics. Part of her work concerns industrial organisation in colonial India and demographic change and sex ratios in 20th-century India. Simultaneous interpretation: AIS Comunicaciones.
