Artis Wodehouse pianolizes a rare 1910s Scott Joplin piano roll, Palm Leaf Rag on a restored 1912 player piano. According to piano roll scholar and collector, Frank Himpsl: "...Palm Leaf Rag is a classic rag by the greatest ragtime composer, Scott Joplin and is very rare on original piano rolls. The only versions which have turned up are on the QRS and Kimball labels. Without a doubt, the Kimball version [heard on this video] is superior, in that it alternates and contrasts the score with full orchestration. One of the greatest classic rag rolls to have in a collection, and a key Joplin item. " Wodehouse pumps the roll, following the simple expression line, allowing the roll's original pedaling to trigger the sustain pedal with no intervention on her part. All dynamics are generated by her foot-pumping. Palm Leaf Rag was published in 1903, four years after the publication of Joplin's iconic Maple Leaf Rag of 1899. The roll on this video was not hand-played, but was arranged from the published sheet music. Wodehouse's large, 58-inch upright player piano was restored by Paul Manganaro. Video recorded 10/12/20.
