A Wild Trout Trust "Practical Visit" supported by funding from the Esmee Fairbairn trust, the Environment Agency and Colne Water Angling Club. Practical visits (PVs) are the primary means by which hands on training in best practice management of river habitats. Here, members of Colne Water Angling club and their associated "Trout in the Town" volunteer conservationists are being trained "on the job" how to control the large inputs of fine sediment into their river caused by excessive erosion (which has also uncovered a previously buried sewage pipe). This is a fantastic effort by this dedicated band of local people. The techniques used will not only be much more readily re-vegetated and provide habitat for a wide range of wildlife - but will also be much more effective than "hard" rubble, concrete or gabion revetments (which tend to exacerbate erosion downstream). In contrast - the brash bundles used here will "kill" fast floodwater velocities due to their rough surfaces and high surface area to volume ratio.
