Be aware that in exchange for this horrifying crime you will pay a high price." 6. Wide of ceremony 7. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Gen. Esmail Ghaani, head of Iran's Quds force: "Killing this martyr (Soleimani) and martyrs like Seyed Razi (Mousavi) and crimes like what happened in Kerman show how desperate the enemy has become, but it doesn't know that, with divine power and assistance, the Islamic Republic and the resistance will not give up their way of uprooting the Zionist regime, no matter how much it struggles." 12. Crowds waving flags STORYLINE: The Iranian President issued a warning on Wednesday after two bombs exploded and killed at least 95 people at a commemoration for a prominent Iranian general slain by the U.S. in a 2020 drone strike, as the Middle East remains on edge over Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. No one immediately claimed responsibility for what appeared to be the deadliest militant attack to target Iran since its 1979 Islamic Revolution. The gathering marked the fourth anniversary of the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force, in a U.S. drone strike in Iraq. The explosions occurred near his grave site as long lines of people gathered for the event. Iran's leaders vowed to punish those responsible for the blasts, which wounded at least 211 people. "Be aware that in exchange for this horrifying crime you will pay a high price," said Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, addressing crowds. The blasts were minutes apart and shook the city of Kerman, about 820 kilometers (510 miles) southeast of the capital, Tehran. The second blast sprayed shrapnel into a screaming crowd fleeing the first explosion. Iran has multiple foes who could be behind the assault, including exile groups, militant organizations and state actors. While Israel has carried out attacks in Iran over its nuclear program, it has conducted targeted assassinations, not mass casualty bombings. A U.S. State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said American officials had “no reason” to believe Israel was involved in Wednesday's attack in Iran. Sunni extremist groups including the Islamic State group have conducted large-scale attacks in the past that killed civilians in Shiite-majority Iran, though not in relatively peaceful Kerman.
