Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first event in our series, History of Black film, viewing and discussing the history of Black film with Ron Fields (Elting Memorial Library Board of Trustees). More information about that can be found here: / 732125114009127 In this first discussion, Ron introduced us to the work of prolific early filmmaker Oscar Micheaux and delved into what we can observe and find reflected in Michaeaux's fascinating oeuvre. Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951) pictured above, was an African-American author, film director, and independent producer of more than 44 films. The Lincoln Motion Picture Company was the first movie company owned and controlled by black filmmakers, Micheaux is regarded as the first major African-American feature filmmaker and arguably the most successful African-American filmmaker of the first half of the 20th century. He produced both silent films and sound films.
