This video tells the story of Mare Island, the Cold War and the USS VALLEJO. Today the sail of that nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine is a monument located at the same position in the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard building ways where the submarine was built and launched at the height of the Cold War in 1965. If you visit the monument there is a QR code on a stainless steel plaque linking to this video. Mare Island is a National Historic Landmark that was of critical importance to the Bay Area, the Nation, and the World over its 142 years of operation. Today capitalizing on that history is of vital importance to the successful redevelopment of the former naval base. As the operator of the Historic District, it is the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation’s role to keep that history alive where it happened. Now more than ever, given our divisive political climate, understanding that history is vital in understanding our shared roots and culture. Come see Mare Island’s Saint Peter’s Chapel. The chapel is the oldest naval chapel in the United States, and it is once again available for your use as an event venue as are the beautiful and extensive grounds of the Admiral’s Mansion. Sign up to book event venues and tours of Mare Island’s incredible historic district or donate to our foundation on our website at https://www.mihpf.org/.
