A short adventure in North Peru exploring the Chachapoyas region. We arrived well after dark the night before in a small village called San Pablo, where conveniently it turned out that our 'hospedaje' (bed & breakfast) didn't exist. After some door- knocking, a very kind lady offered us a room above her restaurant. The next morning, we set off early for a 6 hour hike to Gocta Falls, the 5th highest waterfall in the world. We took a refreshing dip at the top and then clambering down to the edge of the second immense set of falls, together totalling 771m! After making it to the next town, we linked up with Diego who we met the day before, and who was keen to take us to another location later that day, El Tigri (the Tiger Mountain). One of the most mysterious and fascinating things about Chachapoya culture is how they mummify their dead, building ornate sarcophagi in seemingly impossible locations. The site we visited was only spotted using a telephoto camera in July 2013. Considering the effort to get there and how inaccessible it is, we can understand why! The Tigre sarcophagi consist of upright, clay coffins with painted with faces and jewellery. They are only about 70 cm tall, so people think they were designed for the corpses of children. Pretty incredible, albeit at times quite eerie, to visit a place like that - but safe to say it didn't all quite go to plan...
