Matt Hannafin – A Third Picture of Snow by Evan Cordes (2021) Performed by Lee Elderton (soprano saxophone), Catherine Lee (English horn), and Collin Oldham (cello) live at Extradition, Portland, Oregon, USA, April 1, 2022. In 2015, percussionist Matt Hannafin sold a La Monte Young concert poster via ebay to photographer, gardener, and freelance creative/digital pro Evan Cordes. Learning they lived only a few miles apart, Hannafin offered to hand-deliver it, and a Facebook friendship ensued. In winter 2016, Cordes posted a photo of snow on his back deck, which Hannafin turned into a graphic score. In 2019 they did it again, and then once more in 2021. That third score, based on Cordes’ photo of snow-dusted ground at the Portland Japanese Garden, is the basis for this recording. Hannafin’s text accompanying the photo models a possible aesthetic and thematic approach to its interpretation. You can view and download the score here: https://www.matthannafin.com/s/Matt-H... Extradition is an ensemble working at the intersection of composition and improvisation, intentionality and chance, clarity and silence. Based in Portland, Oregon, USA, we present quarterly concerts and intimate recital events that feature realizations of notated scores, text- and graphics-based works, and structured improvisations. We maintain no repertoire, instead always moving forward—learning and performing new works and then putting them aside to prepare for what’s next. Our public archive of concert recordings reminds us of where we’ve been. https://www.extraditionpdx.com / theextraditionseries Recorded by Branic Howard / openfieldrecording.com Photo by Glenn Sogge
