2020 ASCRS Film Festival WINNER award for the category Cataract Complications

Serious IFIS (Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome) IFIS is a well recognised entity that complicates cataract surgery. In the cataract eye camps for the indigenous Xingu Indians that we have been carrying out in the Amazon area, we have noticed IFIS is more common and much more severe than is usually seen. This film looks at IFIS in the Xingu Indians, discusses the surgical issues and how to overcome them. We also consider the reasons why they get such ‘serious’ IFIS. O Festival de Filmes da “American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery” ASCRS 2020 analisou 150 filmes de mais de 30 países. Dr Takashi Hida, Chairman do Medical Affairs do grupo OPTY foi campeão do Festival de Filmes da ASCRS, categoria Complicações de Catarata. O filme retrata 10 anos de registros do trabalho voluntário (Medicos da Floresta & Expedicionarios da Saude) em tribos indígenas isoladas na Floresta Amazônica. Observamos nessas regiões uma maior incidência de Síndrome de Iris Flácida Intra-operatório (IFIS) cerca de 90% enquanto na literatura é menor que 3%. Nesse video descrevemos a forma mais grave da IFIS de causas ainda desconhecidas. Serão necessários mais expedições e mais estudos para desvendar esse mistério.
