Most people know that this question can set the tone for an entire interview, but what they don’t always realize is that how you answer this will decide the interviewer’s next questions. Hello, everyone! I’m Diksha Arora, your interview coach. Welcome or welcome back to my channel! Today, we’re diving into one of the most common—and surprisingly tricky—interview questions: “Tell me about yourself.” It sounds simple, but this question can be a game-changer in an interview if you handle it right. In this video, we’ll cover: 👉A simple structure to answer this question 👉The psychology behind why interviewers ask it 👉And I’ll share my answer to give you an idea of how to nail it So, let’s jump in! First, let’s understand why interviewers ask this question. Most people think it’s just a warm-up question, but actually, interviewers are looking for three things: ✅Your confidence level ✅Your communication skills ✅Your professional identity—how well you fit the role they’re hiring for In other words, they’re trying to get a sense of who you are, how you communicate, and how relevant you are to the job. Let’s break down a structure that works wonders. → The Past-Present-Future Structure This structure keeps your answer clear and helps you cover everything without going overboard. Here’s how to do it: 1. The Past Start by talking briefly about your career journey, focusing on key roles and big wins. Keep it short and relevant! Example (Past): “I’ve been in project management for about six years. I started my career with XYZ Corp, managing teams to deliver projects on time and within budget. One of my proudest moments was leading a project that saved the company 20% on production costs.” → Psychology Tip: When you mention specific achievements, like “20% on production costs,” it’s more memorable and credible. Numbers make it easier for interviewers to picture your impact. 2. The Present Now, focus on what you’re doing now and highlight any skills or experience relevant to the role you’re applying for. Example (Present): “Right now, I’m a project manager at ABC Inc., focusing on digital transformation. I’m leading a project that’s already cut our processing time by 35% using automation. This role has really deepened my skills in tech integration and process improvement.” Psychology Tip: Try to align your current work with the job you’re interviewing for. When interviewers see that your recent experience is relevant, it reinforces the idea that you’re a great fit. 3. The Future This is where you show them why you’re interested in their company and the role. It’s your chance to tailor your answer to their needs. Example (Future): “I’m really excited about this opportunity because it perfectly aligns with my skills. I’d love to bring my experience to a team and help drive efficiency in new ways.” Psychology Tip: Express real excitement about the role and the company. Interviewers are drawn to candidates who genuinely want to be there and have a clear sense of how they’ll add value.
