Police lathi charge Gorkha protesters in Darjeeling; protest intensifies

The situation in Darjeeling and adjoining hill areas remains tensed on Tuesday after police resorted to lathi charge to crush the Gorkha agitation. Earlier, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed the police to take adequate action against protesters. Last week state government had even sent senior police officials from Kolkata to take charge of law and order that had deteriorated after two casualties. On Tuesday today, protesters had taken out a protest march when the police brutally lathi charged. The situation had turned grave within hours compelling the state government to call Army in  Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong. Police pickets, barricades have been placed in front of government offices, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) offices. The unrest began last Thursday when members of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) began protest against alleged "imposition of Bengali language in the schools in the hills and had called for a 12-hour bandh the following day. The unrest has once brought back the dark days of 80's and mid 90's.
