From my Master's exam from The Royal Danish Academy of Music 05.06.23 From the concert program: "Water Spirit" (2015) is a spiritual sequel to Staffan Mossenmark's "Wood Spirit" (1989), but both of the pieces function as post-modernistic tales of dangerous interactions with supernatural beings (swe: Väsen). Despite being as few as they are, Mossenmark's works are a staple of accordion solo repertoire, and maintain an evergreen popularity among accordionists. My first introduction to Water Spirit was on my first year of studies, hearing the piece in a fællestime, seated in the front row as one of the strongboys of the accordion class blasted his way through it, leaving me awestruck and thinking "we can do that?!". That impression leeched over to my studies of Wood Spirit, which was a pivotal moment on my artistic path. Without saying too much about the piece and spoiling its "plot", I adore how the piece manages to evoke such an odd charm and appeal to the ear, inviting the listener into it and earning their trust (almost like luring them in). That is, until the piece turns on them, entrapping the victim, the offering, before they realize that they've gone past the point of no return. This reminds me of films like "Midsommar" and "The Wicker Man", with a little sprinkle of "The Rite of Spring" and "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" thrown in the mix.
