The Cobbler is a mix of any spirit, sugar, crushed ice and seasonal fruit. The rise of the Cobbler and readily available crushed ice to all (not just the rich) around 1830 was probably not coincidental. But I will state that the relationship between this drink and ice helped to launch ice as a cottage industry. In a 1845 issue of the "Illustrated London News" we find out that Massachusetts harvested lake ice was shipped to London so Bars overseas could make Cobblers, Juleps and other famous "American beverages of Celebrity" We also know that Cobblers gave rise (unsurprisingly) to the Cobbler Shaker, popular nowadays with top bartenders in Japan and the straw. It is an odd fact that this drink was sipped through dry macaroni. Now I don't know if that means that the historic tipple was tiny or Macaroni used to be huge, either way it happened.
