Kara Walker "A Subtlety" at the DOMINO SUGAR REFINING PLANT

James Kalm finally returns to witness the spectacle. Kara Walker is one of today's most recognized and controversial artists, and her presentation of "A Subtlety" will only enhance her status. Constructed in the soon to be demolished Domino Sugar Refinery Factory, a Williamsburg landmark, this massive sculpture combines many of Walker's trademark themes and images. Crouched, sphinx like, this "Sugar Baby's" head is bound with an Aunt Jemima like bandana. The corpulent sensuality of this goddess combines fertility and sexuality, and its white translucent body is coated in tons of sugar. Dispersed around the exhibition space are a series of "Banana Boys", smaller male figures cast in brown amber candy, and doused in syrup, which are dissolving during the run of the show. This temporary sculptural installation has been accomplished with support from Creative Time, the National Endowment for the Arts, Domino Sugar, Sikkema Jenkins & Co., Two Trees Management and others.
