Trangia alcohol stoves are great but in cold weather it can take a while for them to reach operating temperatures unless you use a preheater. There is a winter attachment sold by Trangia, which costs around $25, but for just a little time and very little money you can make your own which will work just as efficiently. Using a tuna can, I bonded a piece of carbon felt to the inside bottom of the can using silicone adhesive, which is fire proof. This makes the preheater. The carbon felt will work like a wick and when you add a little bit of alcohol, it will light right up. You then place the, “preheater” under the Trangia burner, let it warm up for a minute or two and it will then light right up. It is a simple and inexpensive way not only to make the Trangia a true four-season stove but at the same time save some money in doing it.
