You may have seen or heard the phrase “particulate matter” or “PM” as the wildfires in Canada continue to create air quality impacts across parts of the United States. So what is particulate matter and why should we care about it? And what is Tennessee doing about it? Particulate matter is the term for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air. Particles can be fine enough to be inhaled and lead to health problems. Some are emitted directly from a source – like a fire. TDEC has air quality monitors across the state that check particulate matter levels. Air quality alerts are issued when certain levels are reached that may be unhealthy for people. Learn more about what particulate matter is, how it affects your health, and what the state does to monitor for it in this brief video with Larry from TDEC’s Division of Air Pollution Control.
