In Hollywood’s Camino De Santiago movie “The Way,” Martin Sheen’s character decides to walk the extra 69km (43mi) of The Way of Saint James, from Santiago de Compostela to Kilometre 0 on the Atlantic Coast, at Muxía. We only hiked short sections of the Camino—mostly doing the route as a #roadtrip—so getting to Muxia was pretty easy (despite the hardships of all the wine and food-induced comas on the car rides). The shore here is known as the Costa da Morta (Coast of Death) due to its strong waves causing many a shipwreck over the centuries—including the Prestige tanker, which busted open in 2002, creating a huge oil spill (bringing death to wildlife) before sinking itself. A tall monument to the Prestige stands next to the Kilometre 0 marker. Muxia is also a religious site, home of the Church of Nosa Señora da Barca (Our Lady of the Boat). Nearby is the sacred Pedra dos Abalar, which is believed to have healing powers for many diseases if you crawl under its arch. But perhaps the most notable thing about Muxía being one of the finish lines of the Camino is that it’s where Martin Sheen et al. once stood at the edge of the Atlantic, at the end of the movie. Furthermore, if you’re a fan of my #theglobaltripsituationalirony hashtag on Instagram, you’ll see it’s also where I staged a situationally ironic photo of us watching the end of “The Way” at the end of The Way. — That’s a wrap, folks, from Muxía, Galicia, Spain / España. 🇪🇸 #theglobaltripgalicia ##theglobaltripspain
