CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Any time people have a brain injury or even a major surgery to repair or improve their health, the right rehabilitation team can make a big difference in recovery and sometimes even in what a person will be able to do when they go home. Local 12 News had a chance to tour the new TriHealth Rehabilitation Hospital that opens the weekend of April 29, in Evanston. It's three floors, 60 beds and will employ more than 150 people. It's also part of a newer trend in care where patients transition from a main hospital to a completely different facility for rehab rather than to just a different wing or floor from where they were initially admitted for care or a procedure. What this allows some of the team to do is work with rehab patients one-on-one in a comfortable setting designed for those who need to learn to maybe to walk, talk eat or even do basic skills they would at home. Mark Asnen, TriHealth CEO, said, "Estimated length of stay here is usually between 8 and 14 days. It can be longer, some lower. That's the majority of it, stroke patients and those with brain injuries their conditions could be here for a longer length of stay." One of the really interesting things is that it is a facility also specifically designed to meet the needs of those who have had bariatric surgery to lose weight. That means the room doors and restroom doors are large enough now to wheel beds in and out for those up to 700 pounds. Quite often what people don't realize is that the recovery after that to use muscles and regain health can be quite lengthy and so it's important to have that kind of care available in the community.
