Gunfire and explosions erupted on Thursday in Bukavu, where M23 rebels were holding a rally, two weeks after they took control of the city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Information on who carried out the attack is yet to be available. However, speaking with Reuters via telephone after he fled the scene, Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the Congo River Alliance (AFC), one of the groups that form the M23, alleged that President Felix Tshisekedi was responsible. Tshisekedi’s government is yet to comment on the matter. The attack was carried out soon after Nangaa carried out his first public address in Bukavu, after the M23 seized control of the city. Nangaa told their supporters that “in a few days” the rebels would implement “security measures” in Uvira, a city in DRC’s South Kivu province. The measures would be like those taken in Goma and Bukavu. Some information was sourced from Reuters.
