I recently got a comment on a video saying I’d look younger if I cut my hair shorter — and it immediately made me think: why should I want to look younger? In this short video, I talk about why I’m keeping my long hair, the subtle pressures women over 50 still face about age and appearance, and how the idea of “looking younger” has become an expectation instead of a choice. Especially when it comes to being in the workforce. The comment was on my video, "Laid Off At 58-My Story". Now, I don’t really think my layoff had anything to do with age — but I do think ageism exists in subtle ways, especially when companies or people assume we need to “look the part” to stay relevant. For me, long hair feels authentic, and I’m not cutting it just to meet anyone else’s standard.
