Christopher Jette: HandLine [live performance] HandLine develops the SoundLines project into a solo work. Sound is generated by transforming movement of the body (specifically the hands) into sound. A videocamera serves as the interface and software turns individual rows/columns of the video matrix into an audio waveforms. Movement within the visual field of the camera changes the waveform, shaping the timbre of the resulting sound. The playback of the audio waveform is tuned to just intervals and within a rational overtone series. A composed series of dyads define the sonic arc of the work. Just as a guitar string is plucked by a pick and the wooden resonator shapes and amplifies the sound, movement initiates sound and the resonance of the system shape the sound. This piece is part of larger series of works (SoundLines) developed for individuals and groups of dancers, they each explore a different trajectory in the relationship between movement and sound. Michele Cheng: Doyennes' Diaries [prerecorded audio and video] Doyennes' Diaries, through intimate perspective of four women-identified artists, the project peeks into the everyday life of modern women that we don't usually see on the media. Cathleen Grado: The Fells [prerecorded audio] The Fells is a piece in a series titled 'Real and Imaginary Places' and is inspired by the new sounds of moving water from a flood in the woods, occurring after construction and the clearing of trees…among other things. D'or Seifer and Eoin Callery: Living Room By The Sea [live performance] Performing poems and music in a live virtual acoustic with additional live convolution process. The impulses used for the live convolutions come from many places/objects/materials including ocean waves. It sounds nice here, we hope it sounds nice where you are! Douglas McCausland: [neo]Lalia [prerecorded audio and video] [neo]Lalia is an intermedia work for video and third-order ambisonics audio. Created as a companion work to Autoimmune, a collaboration with artist Marcos Serafim, [neo]Lalia would not exist without his generosity and artistic input. Neolalia: Noun // ne·o·la·lia // nēōˈlālēə Speech, especially of a psychotic nature that includes words that are new and meaningless to the hearer. [neo]Lalia is a meditation on the human voice and the intersection of the organic and the artificial. Aesthetically, in this work I’m seeking to engage with the liminal points which can be found between these two concepts. To this end, both the video and audio were constructed with the assistance of machine-learning systems, which were trained using a corpus of hours of recordings of human speech. This training was then utilized to manipulate elements across the audiovisual spectrum, including the manipulation of newly recorded materials, the synthesis of completely new materials, the distortion / fragmentation of video, and so on. Though often highly chaotic and removed from its source material, materials which are innately human can be found throughout the entirety of [neo]Lalia. The title of the work further serves to tie this work to my previous [re]//Glossolalia project, which similarly mediated on the sonic qualities of human speech.
