In September 2020, Phantasialand opened its new themed land, Rookburgh, and its star attraction, F.L.Y., without notice. It shook the roller coaster enthusiast community worldwide. F.L.Y. and Rookburgh have been in development for 10 years. Construction started in 2016 on a lot previously occupied by the simulator ride Race for Atlantis. In the years between 2016 and 2020, Phantasialand didn't do much other than putting up a teaser stating "World's First Launched Flying Coaster". The project went largely under secrecy, with coaster enthusiasts being able to uncover only the layout as well as the construction progress. When it did open without announcement in September 2020, the project came alive. It's a marvel of engineering, indeed. They fit a 109-key hotel, a 1.3km-long roller coaster (that's close to 4,100 feet) with 100 crossovers, shops, and amenities in a tiny footprint of just 75m x 100m.
