In 2020, every day in India, on average, 19 young women lost their lives to dowry harassment. In just five years, between 2017 and 2022, nearly 7,000 such deaths were reported annually. Last year alone, thousands of women reached out to the National Commission for Women — many for dowry abuse, others for domestic violence. And yet, these numbers barely scratch the surface of what goes unreported. Recently, in Bengaluru, two young women — Poojashri and Shilpa, a pregnant software engineer — died within days of each other, allegedly due to dowry harassment. And a few days ago, Nikki Bhati also died, allegedly due to dowry demands. Behind each of these cases is not just grief, but the same old story: pressure for dowry, cruelty at home, and a system that too often looks the other way. India has laws against this — the Dowry Prohibition Act, Section 498A, Section 80 of Bhartya Nyay Sanhita. Yet convictions are rare, and families are left broken. So today, we ask: why do women still die for dowry? Is it the law that fails, or the way we enforce it?
