On 23 October 1986, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh inspected the large contingent of Gurkha troops stationed in Hong Kong. The Gurkha Brigade band welcomed the Duke with a fanfare of bagpipes and a wreath of flowers. Still a dependent territory of the UK, Hong Kong would remain so for another 11 years until 1997, when it was "handed over" to the People's Republic of China.
