Day 4 Paris review: The modern history of France is centered around revolution - taking from the wealthy upper class to restore power to the lower class. It seems that this culture is still prominent in Paris - I have never experienced such an extortionate city. Being forced to pay for public toilets, pickpocketing, illegal salesmen (who could be mistaken for homeless) selling cheap souviners on the street, and generally high prices for everything. The Louvre, Arc de Triumph, Luxor Obelisk (and more) are all monuments representing Paris' dominance - reminders that they are more powerful than other countries. The Eiffel Tower was built to commemerate 100 years after the french revolution, and to be the tallest human-made structure at the time. Paris seems obsessed with showing they are the best - an attitude that used to lie with the upperclass before the revolution. Of course I only visited the tourist destinations, and was only there for one day, but it was enough for me to change my plans to avoid returning to Paris.
